Novgorod’s private Stone Millstone Museum released a coloring book

The souvenir coloring book is a new way for the private, family-run Stone Millstone Museum to work with family audiences.

The aim of the project/coloring book is to record and illustrate the ancestors’ vocabulary of millstone techniques so that it is recognized and/or not forgotten by the widest possible range of contemporaries. Whether the guests have been to the Millstone Museum or not yet, the 21 illustrations of the coloring book will be used to bring parents and children together in families to talk about ancestral life and wisdom. On the left side of the spread is a cheerful dictionary article about millinery expressions to help parents, and on the right side is a witty illustration for the child to color in. So much for dialogue and an evening of sharing!

Features of the edition: it is replicated with the support of the regional micro-grant, illustrated by the daughter of the owner of the Stone Millstone Museum – 14-year-old Olesya Mikhailova (on the photo) and timed to the Year of Family and the fifth anniversary of the family museum.

– The expressions “pour by eye” and “jabbering away” came from the mill trade – the coloring will reveal the original meaning of these phrases, – rejoices millstone collector Vladimir Lvovsky.

– I wrote down after the millstone collector the meaning of phraseological expressions that are still used today in everyday speech, but originated from mill life, – shares the eldest son Gleb, a student of IT-college. – Contemporaries don’t even realize it, that’s why I made a dictionary of 20 pages and posted it on the Museum’s website zhernova53.site. In May, this work was awarded with a special diploma of the All-Russian Student CONCURSE-FORUM of Communication Projects “Engineers of Meanings” in the nomination “BEST PRACTICAL WORK IN THE INDUSTRY” with the wording “for a bold attempt to combine technology and communication”: vk.com/wall-192844089_914.

– I illustrated 20 phraseological phrases with drawings,’ explains daughter Olesya, a third-year student at the Kremlin Children’s Art School. – Potentially any parent will be able to download our coloring book from the Museum’s website to draw with their child.

– I will have to distribute paper copies of the coloring book to a number of pre-school educational institutions in the city,’ adds son Naum. – The museum is going out with interactive activities for children, and then the coloring book “comes to life” in front of their eyes!

– The children are under 18, so I will administer the publication of the coloring book under an agreement with the organizers of the competition,’ confirms dad, PhD candidate Alexander Mikhailov. – I think the 48-page coloring book will become a fresh tool for communication between adults and children in families.

– The coloring book “SECRETS OF MILLSTONES” may well become a document for submission to the Register of Intangible Culture of the Peoples of Russia,’ plans Elena Mikhailova, the owner of the Stone Millstone Museum. – Here the vocabulary about the methods of working on millstones is recorded and illustrated. This is a truly patriotic publication about the technology and speech of ancestors in the entertaining form of a coloring book. We are grateful that the release of the coloring book “SECRETS OF MILLSTONES” was supported by regional funding following the results of the regional competition of printed and multimedia projects on the history and culture of the Novgorod land.

Presentation of the coloring book “SECRETS OF MILLSTONES” is appointed on Day of dictionaries and encyclopedias on 22.11.2024 and will take place in the Kremlin of Veliky Novgorod in regional library at 18:00.
