Every year, on May 18, the world celebrates International Museum Day. The Volgograd Museum of Weights and Measures also takes part in the celebration. Traditionally, the museum hosted the joint celebration of Museum Day and World Metrology Day, which was observed on May 20. It included a guided tour of the museum, where everyone could learn about the science of precise and uniform measurements.
This March, the head of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology Anton Pavlovich Shalaev visited the Volgograd Museum of Weights and Measures. He expressed appreciation for the collection, as well as the scientific and educational work of the museum: “It was very interesting to see a museum dedicated entirely to weights and scales in Volgograd! In terms of youth engagement, I believe it will give children and students a better understanding of the importance of precise measurements.”
Of course, it would hardly be possible to receive such a review without many years of hard work to study and popularize the world history of scales. Volgograd Historical and Technical Museum of Weights and Measures was founded in 2009 as part of Volgograd Factory of Weighing Equipment, LLC. Over the years, the collection grew significantly, currently featuring more than 2,400 antique weights and scales. Today, the museum is an honorary member of the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors (Europe), as well as a member of the German society of metrologists and collectors “Maß und Gewicht”.
